Our Mission

We believe every client should get paid for every valid invoice. We don’t quit until we have your money or your customer is insolvent.

The Kaplan Group has assembled a group of business professionals and debt collection techniques to achieve this mission. We don’t use overseas call centers, letter series, auto-dialers or script reading collectors like most collection agencies. Instead, our professionals develop a deep understanding of each individual claim and the non-paying customer and then create a strategy that is focused on maximizing the likelihood of success. We can provide this higher level of service at very competitive contingency rates because of our unrivaled success rate in getting your money.

Our California based professionals have experience and education that you can’t find anywhere else. Many have graduate or college degrees. We’ve worked as senior executives, consultants and managers for a wide variety of companies. We use that inside knowledge to figure out the best way to collect on each claim. And then we collect!

Our in house law firm will do a full second debt collection effort if necessary. There is no extra or up front charge for this service – you pay the same low rate whether we collect as an agency or attorney.

We have an 85% success rate on large viable claims and 76% on viable claims under $10,000. Over 97% of our successful cases are solved without going to court. But, if litigation is the only way to collect, we have a nationwide network of attorneys who will handle your case on a contingency basis. We hate the court room, but we won’t hesitate to go there upon your written approval if that is the only way to get your money.

Of the thousands of collection agencies in the USA, we are one of less than 250 that have been qualified by the International Association of Commercial Collectors. The Better Business Bureau gives our collection agency an A+ rating. We are licensed and bonded to collect in all 50 states. We have never had a complaint filed against our firm and every on-line review is 5-Star.

We Understand Business in San Diego

As a collection agency, it is important to understand the business of our clients and their customers. Our principals have prior business experience in the tourism, technology, and government contracting industries as well as with real estate, manufacturing and service companies. Having worked on the inside and knowing how these companies run, we can translate this experience into outstanding debt collection results.

We know what it is like to be part of the business establishment that caters to the defense industry, from working through government bureaucracy to dealing with sub-contractors and suppliers. San Diego’s port and border location make international business a huge opportunity. Our principals have traveled to over 60 countries negotiating international transactions during the last 25 years. We understand the how the ebbs and flows of the tourism business can impact a company’s ability to pay and we know how to get your money in these situations!

San Diego Collection Agency Resources

We frequently use the resources below when collecting from San Diego companies:

Collection Agency Tips for San Diego Businesses

A good credit application collects extensive contact information on your customer. If things go south, this information can be extremely helpful for a debt collector or attorney. It can even help your in-house collection staff if you get multiple ways to contact a small business owner and get multiple contact names at larger organizations. Banking information, trade references, ownership information and entity structure and history are other common categories.

Collecting the information is a good first step. but the real value comes from analyzing the information. If nothing else, just confirming the information is accurate is important and can be done in just a few minutes. We explain how to use five free resources to validate most of the information on a credit application in this article in our resource center. If during this analysis you determine some of the information is inaccurate or misleading, you can prevent a collection problem before it happens.

The credit application can also be used to establish the legal terms of your business relationship with your customer. For example, in the U.S. you do not get attorney fees when you win a lawsuit unless there is a provision for this in a signed contract. Just having this as a term on the back of your invoice is not sufficient. So, if you want to have the legal right to make your customer pay for collection costs or attorney fees, then have this language on your credit application.
