Some of our clients have a personal guaranty section on their credit application. While many potential business customers refuse to provide a personal guaranty, many others simply fill out the entire application, and in the process agree to the guaranty. Just because you get a personal guaranty does not mean you will get paid. But it is always better to have one even if it is not necessary.
The guaranty can be extremely valuable if you end up with a collection problem. First, it does give you a secondary source of repayment in the form of the guarantors income and assets. Second, it makes your invoices higher priority than those that are not guaranteed, as the guarantor knows you can come after their personal assets if necessary.
