Collection Agency Tips for Boston Businesses
As you work to collect unpaid invoices from your delinquent customers, your demeanor when collecting is very important. You do not want to be too aggressive or too passive. Sometimes you may be trying to maintain your customer relationship so a softer touch should be applied. However, when a customer just isn’t worth the time and effort required to keep the account paid up, a more aggressive approach may be your only hope.
Demand letters and emails are often effective collection tools, but when no response is received, the telephone is your best bet. Once you have the debtor on the phone, get right to the point and state clearly that payment is expected right away. If they make excuses, try to determine the true nature of the payment problem and work for a promise to pay with a date specified. Follow up regularly until payment is received and develop a plan for future orders with the customer. Don’t assume that future orders will be paid for on time. Changing the credit terms can be an effective payment motivator.
